GEORGE TOWN: A century of service to the visually impaired community will be commemorated this year as St. Nicholas' Home Penang marks its 100th anniversary, with a series of activities including a community fun walk aimed at raising awareness and support for the blind and visually impaired.

One of the highlight events is the St. Nicholas’ Home 100th Anniversary Fun Walk, scheduled for April 18, 2026, bringing together families, supporters, and fitness enthusiasts in a meaningful celebration of inclusion and community spirit.

The fun walk, organised in conjunction with the Home’s centennial celebrations, is expected to attract participants from across Penang and beyond. Registration for the event is currently open, with entries closing on March 31, 2026.

Founded nearly a century ago to date, St. Nicholas’ Home has played a pivotal role in supporting individuals who are blind or visually impaired through education, rehabilitation and community programmes. Over the decades, the institution has expanded its services to include vocational training, computer skills development, and specialised support for people with multiple disabilities, helping them achieve greater independence and integration into society.

Beyond its training and welfare programmes, the Home has also been actively involved in community initiatives that promote eye health, accessibility and inclusion. Through partnerships with organisations and healthcare providers, it has contributed to programmes such as cataract surgery assistance for underprivileged patients, helping restore vision and improve quality of life for many beneficiaries.

The upcoming fun walk forms part of a broader effort to celebrate the Home’s long-standing legacy while engaging the public in its mission. Participants will have the opportunity not only to enjoy a healthy morning activity but also to learn more about the challenges faced by the visually impaired community and how society can support greater inclusivity.

Organisers say the event is designed to be family-friendly and accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, reinforcing the message that everyone can play a role in supporting the visually impaired community.

As St. Nicholas’ Home enters its second century, the centennial celebrations serve both as a tribute to the generations of beneficiaries and supporters who have shaped its journey and as a call for continued community support to ensure its services remain available for future generations.

Those interested in participating in the 100th Anniversary Fun Walk can register through the event’s official online platform.
